Aging is not a disease but is one of the strongest factors associated with diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular, dementia and other chronic conditions leading to loss of autonomy, increased susceptibility to other conditions and a burden to health care systems. As the immune system interacts with most of the physiological systems, it can be used as a surrogate marker of the various organs’ dysfunctions. The study of T cells has shown that their differentiation is highly driven by few dominant stressors (eg. cytomegalovirus) and that accumulation of stressors leads to accumulation of dysfunctional, senescent T cells. Concomitantly, the accumulation of senescent non-immune cells is known to happen altogether leading to a pro-inflammatory state in aging termed inflamm-aging. During this seminar, we will cover those concepts and detail our recent findings on T cell differentiation and senescence. The implication on health in old age (healthspan and diseases) will be discussed as well as potential strategies to reduce the burden of senescent on physiological systems.
